Course Overview
The Certificate in Bibyo Studies is a foundational program designed to introduce students, spiritual practitioners, cultural leaders, and scholars to the teachings, rituals, and sacred philosophy enshrined in Bibyo, the first scriptural text of Uganda Traditional Spirituality.
It equips learners with knowledge of African spiritual ethics, sacred texts, ritual practices, and moral leadership rooted in indigenous Ugandan traditions.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Understand the origin, structure, and sacred function of Bibyo.
Interpret verses and scriptures of Bibyo in spiritual, moral, and communal contexts.
Practice key rituals, invocations, and ceremonies in line with traditional teachings.
Appreciate the role of Bibyo in spiritual leadership, justice, and reconciliation.
Promote intercultural dialogue and indigenous faith literacy.
Become trained readers and interpreters (Bakyusa) of the sacred text.

| 4 | Rituals and Ceremonies | Sacred service, ancestral honouring, initiation, reconciliation and prayers. |
| 5 | Ethics and Moral Law | Codes for priests, elders, families, and community justice. |
| 6 | Interpreting the Text | Traditional hermeneutics, chant-call formats, and symbolic meaning. |
| 7 | Leadership and Priesthood | Roles of Supreme Priest, Council Elders, Keepers of Sacred Rites, and Youth Apprentices. |
| 8 | Contemporary Application | Bibyo in healing, governance, education, conflict resolution and ecological protection. |
Assessment Methods
Text interpretation assignments
Ritual performance and group chants
Oral and written exam in sacred language and symbolism
Final individual presentation or community teaching simulation
Certification
Graduates shall be awarded the Certificate in Bibyo Studies and may be eligible for induction as:
Youth Apprentices,
Assistant Keepers of Rites, or
Community Bibyo Readers (Abakyusa)
They will also be invited to further training for priesthood or cultural education roles under the Uganda Traditional Spirituality Council.
