Research Degrees
The Masters and Ph.D degree programs are designed for those who wish to obtain further education in a selected field and to develop their ability for critical inquiry, independent research, and teaching.
Degrees and Fields
The Graduate School offers research and professional degrees in nearly the following fields of study.

Research degrees with an original thesis or dissertation as part of the degree requirements.
- M.S. (Master of Science)
- M.A. (Master of Arts)
- M.A./Ph.D. or M.S./Ph.D. (joint Master’s/Doctor of Philosophy)
- Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy)
Master’s Requirements:
- Completed degree from a public or officially recognised university/higher education institution in a relevant field.
- At least a “satisfactory” or Grade C equivalent earned in your previous degree.
- Your undergraduate degree should be worth 240 ECTS credits.
If you do not have the required amount of credits, you may be able to take a TASC exam (see Further Options for Admission) or enrol in another way. Please talk to our student recruitment team for help.
Professional Experience:
For some 60-ECTS master programmes, you will need to have achieved one year of professional work experience before starting your studies.
English Level:
- Proof of English skills.
- Overall English Requirements:
- TOEFL (minimum 80 points) or
- IELTS (minimum Level 6.0 out of 9 points) or
- Duolingo English test (minimum 95 points) or
- Cambridge Certificate (minimum B grade overall) or
- Equivalent proof
- If English is your native language or you graduated from an English-speaking school/university, you do not have to prove your English skills.
Doctoral Admissions
Applications for doctorate study are accepted all year round. Students may submit their application by using the Royal Open University online application form and paying the application fee.
The entry requirements for admission to a Doctorate degree programme include:
- An accredited Master’s degree in a relevant subject area. Students may be considered for doctorate study if their degree is in an unrelated field provided, they have relevant professional experience and can prove their ability to work at the doctorate level. A wide range of international qualifications may also be considered. Students are advised to contact the Office of Admissions to find out more about the range of international academic qualifications accepted.
- Official Master’s degree transcripts.
- Recognized proof of English proficiency if previous studies were not taught in the English language. Otherwise, an IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.5 in the writing component and no individual component lower than 6.0) is required; or an English Placement Test result with a 6.5 equivalence (provided no score in each individual component is less than 6.0).
- Personal Statement Statement of Purpose (minimum 500 words).
- Current CV.
- Two official letters of recommendation (one academic and one professional).
- Research proposal or project outline.
- Evidence of ability to undertake independent research.
