Course Summary:
General English is a foundational university common unit designed for all incoming students to assess and strengthen their English language proficiency, which serves as the primary medium of instruction across academic programmes. The course provides a comprehensive diagnostic and developmental framework to evaluate students’ abilities in key language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Through a combination of placement assessments, interactive learning activities, and continuous evaluation, the course identifies students’ proficiency levels and places them appropriately for further language support where necessary. Emphasis is placed on academic communication, including comprehension of lectures, participation in discussions, critical reading of scholarly texts, and effective academic writing.

The course also introduces students to essential grammar, vocabulary, and study skills required for success in a university environment. By the end of the unit, students will have a clearer understanding of their English proficiency level and will be better prepared to engage confidently with academic content delivered in English.
